Summary: The Welder Fabricator plays a key role in maintaining and restoring vintages railcars and equipment. This position combines welding and fabrication expertise with mechanical skills to ensure the safety, reliability and functionality of our railroad fleet.
Essential Functions
· Fabrication and Welding
o Perform welding and metal fabrication for railcar repair and restoration
o Utilize techniques such as MIG, TIG, stick welding and oxy-acetylene and plasma cutting
o Fabricate and install metal components for structural, mechanical and cosmetic purposes
· Railcar Maintenance and Repair
o Inspect, repair and maintain railcars, including structural, mechanical and brake systems
o Replace or fabricate damaged parts, including couplers, gears, wheels and axles
o Conduct routine preventative maintenance on all railroad equipment
· Collaboration and Safety
o Work closely with other mechanics and members of the shop team to ensure efficient operation and meeting goals
o Follow all safety protocols and maintain a clean and organized work environment
o Document all repairs, inspections and maintenance tasks accurately
Education/Minimum Requirements
· High school diploma or equivalent
· Certification in welding (AWS or similar) preferred
· Experience in welding, fabrication or railcar maintenance is highly desirable
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
· Proficient in welding, metal cutting, and fabrication techniques
· Familiarity with railcar and mechanical systems is a plus
· Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals
· Strong problem solving skills and attention to detail
· Team oriented with excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Working Conditions/Essential Job Functions
· Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical labor
· Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions
· Must be able to climb, kneel and work in confined spaces
