Job Description:
Under the supervision of the Chief Wastewater Plant Operator, performs semi-skilled work in a moderately complex operation, monitoring, maintaining and servicing of equipment in a wastewater treatment plant.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Inspects and operates plant equipment to assure proper treatment levels.
- Takes samples and performs routine chemical analysis.
- Carries out corrective and preventive maintenance action as necessary.
- Records all readings, chemical analyses, and maintenance performed as required.
- Enters data; obtains computer readings.
- Makes periodic rounds of the plant to check equipment.
- Cleans bar screen and grit chamber, clarifiers, and Parshall flumes.
- Maintains pumps and motors at lift stations and at plant.
- Assures maintenance of electric power; changes oil; assures lubrication of parts; checks belts and filters.
- Washes down floors.
- Checks standby generator and chemicals, adjusts as necessary.
- Operates loader, dump truck, and maintainer.
- Performs building and grounds maintenance.
- Paints, mows grass, cleans drying beds; windrows, hauls and applies sludge to fields.
- Removes snow as necessary.
- Attends training sessions.
- Understands and uses safe procedures.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- Working knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and repair of pumps, motors, electrical systems and related equipment in a wastewater treatment plant.
- Considerable knowledge of the hazards and safety requirements applicable to the work.
- Some knowledge of the characteristics of wastewater.
- Some knowledge of basic chemistry, mathematics, and biology.
- Possess hand/eye/foot coordination adequate to operate a front-end loader, maintainer, hand tools, and a vehicle.
- Ability to learn the more technical aspects of plant operation and testing.
- Ability to accurately interpret plant data and to keep accurate records and reports.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing and to act quickly and properly to resolve problems as they arise.
- Ability to follow moderately complex written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to work independently and to exercise sound judgement.
- Ability to perform moderate/heavy physical work and to lift up to 100 pounds and to carry up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to stand, walk, sit, climb, bend, kneel, twist, pull, push, reach, grasp, pinch, ride and perform a variety of similar body movements.
- Ability to talk and hear in person, by telephone, and by two-way radio, and to detect malfunctions and repair needs of equipment.
- Ability to see and read instruction, charts, graphs, and test results.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors and the public.
- Must be able to work various on call shifts including weekends.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- Any combination of training and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and one year of experience in wastewater treatment plant operations and maintenance or in mechanical repair work.
- Possess or the ability to attain Class “D” wastewater license within one year of appointment to the position; with the ability to attain a Class “C” wastewater license within two years of appointment to the position. Will be required to successfully pass a criminal background check, pre-employment drug test, and physical exam.

- Proficient in English. Other languages helpful.

- Must be able to concentrate on tasks with many distractions.
- Ability to perform moderate physical work and lift50 pounds and to occasionally lift and carry up to 50 pounds.

- Ability to stand, walk, sit, twist, reach, bend, grasp, kneel and perform a variety of similar body movements; ability to stand and sit for extended periods of time.
