Basic Purpose of the Job
Under general direction, performs heavy manual labor and equipment operation for the repair, maintenance and installation of equipment at the wastewater treatment plant. Assists in wastewater treatment operations and maintenance of unit processes and equipment, plant grounds, laboratory and industrial pretreatment. Maintains a safe work environment.

  • Assist with daily wastewater treatment plant functions such as maintaining equipment, buildings, extended air process and pump operations, performing process control of activated sludge and digester. Assist with collecting sludge and wastewater samples and performing analysis. Conduct informative tours in a professional and courteous manner as requested.
  • Perform heavy manual labor and equipment operation including loaders, backhoes, sewer rodders, sewer jet and other equipment associated with the repair, maintenance and installation of equipment at the wastewater treatment plant.
  • Assist other City departments and other public works personnel in performing their tasks within the department.
  • Perform sludge dewatering operations and transportation to disposal site.
  • Input data on computer and operate SCADA system. Record pertinent data in log book, maintenance records, bench sheets, etc.
  • Train lower level employees and/or seasonal workers.
  • Read and interpret basic maps and blueprints.
  • Actively participates in weekend plant operations and responds to after-hours emergencies.

Job Requirements:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Experience performing maintenance, public works operations, and construction work in the assigned area of responsibility.
  • Working knowledge of a water distribution systems, sanitary sewer collection systems, and maintenance equipment including sewer jet operation.
  • Knowledge of plant operations, including process equipment maintenance and repair, process control, sample collection and laboratory analysis, sludge dewatering operations and transportation of biosolids to disposal site.
  • Knowledge of SCADA operations and standard construction practices relating to water systems and waste water collection preferred.
  • This position is subject to non-standard working hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Licensures & Certificates (must be active and current.):
  • Current Colorado Class A or B Commercial Drivers license with acceptable driving record.
  • Traffic control Flagger certification preferred.
  • Entry - Ability to obtain OCPO Wastewater Treatment D Certification within two (2) years.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
Requires ability to perform heavy manual labor. Strenuous physical work requiring ability to lift a maximum of 100 pounds; frequent lifting, carrying, walking and standing, hand/eye coordination. The employee frequently is required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Frequent hand/eye coordination for operation of personal computer, and use of hands to handle small parts; vision for reading and preparing written reports and documents; frequent speech communication, hearing and listening to maintain communications with employees and citizens. Requires driving and walking during inclement weather. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles; extreme cold and extreme heat. The employee is occasionally exposed to vibration. The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud.
