Job Description

Under the Sheriff's general direction, performs higher complexity in decision-making, establishing operational actions, investigative processes, supervisory competences, and leadership in personnel management. Acts in the role of sheriff when directed to do so.

General Duties

Essential Functions

  • Confers with the Sheriff on matters pertaining to departmental operations and provides the Sheriff with a briefing of department operations; establishes standards of work and operating procedures; submits operational reports.
  • Able to respond to any situation and provide sound judgement.
  • Assist in all situations and be able to take responsibility as “Incident Commander” on all critical situations that require a tactical response.
  • Must be able to assess the situation and determine a response or tactical plan.
  • Able to assess the complexities of crime scenes and manage and direct personnel and resources for calls for service.
  • Supervises and directs, through subordinate supervisors’ major functions of custody, public safety, and operational support.
  • Consults, coordinates, and advises the Sheriff and sheriff’s office staff on personnel issues and the evaluation of the supervisors on-going operations; confers with and assists the Sheriff with analysis of agency actions
  • Assists in the development, revision, review and implementation of departmental and general law enforcement policies, procedures, and operations.
  • Participates in selecting personnel for promotion and the hiring of new employees; reviews applications and conducts interviews; makes recommendations regarding disciplinary investigations and actions.
  • Participates in the personnel and labor relation activities of the department, including negotiations, grievances, and other personnel actions.
  • Directs research and planning regarding department organization, facilities, training, organizational systems, analysis of existing programs, and grant management and other projects as directed
  • Coordinates investigative work with the county, city, state, federal, and other law enforcement agencies; maintains liaison with County departments and appropriate public and private groups.
  • Perform daily duties, such as viewing reports, corresponding with the Lake County District Attorney’s Office, and ensuring all authorized paperwork is complete.
  • Ensure reports are complete, accurate, and prepared for distribution to the Court, Clerks, and District Attorney.
  • Maintain strong time management skills to complete supervisory reports, budget reviews and allocation, personnel scheduling, team training, reviewing reports, patrolling, and meetings.
  • Represents the Sheriff at various official and civic meetings; makes public appearances to describe departmental policies and procedures and to promote public relations; answers correspondence, prepares detailed analyses and reports, and conducts special studies.
  • Follows the Lake County Sheriff’s Office policy and procedure guidelines and the Lake County Employee Handbook.
  • Perform complete research regarding citizen complaints and appropriate follow though
  • Perform a range of duties, ranging from sitting for extended periods in a patrol vehicle to standing or walking for long periods.
  • Able to work in adverse weather conditions, including rain, sleet, hail, and snow – and under extreme time constraints.
  • Able to work alone and with minimal guidance or supervision.
  • Be self-motivated, possess and exhibit leadership characteristics and display an elevated level of self-initiative.
  • Responsible for the daily enforcement of Colorado Statutes and Lake County Ordinances.
  • Maintain a proactive approach to law enforcement and adhere to patrol deputy duties and responsibilities.
  • Responsible for all required documentation for government contracts and operations.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervises Deputy Sheriffs, Detentions Officers, Dispatch, and Sheriff’s Office Staff as directed by the Sheriff.

Requirements

  • Colorado State peace officer certification or ability to gain the certification within one year of date of hire.
  • High school diploma or GED. Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in Criminal Studies, preferred.
  • Two (2) years of supervisory experience in the field of Law Enforcement or related field
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid Colorado driver’s license.
  • Criminal history and driving record shall be law enforcement appropriate and applicable to agency standards.
  • Ability to pass all required examinations within the testing process, including a physical ability exam, psychological exam, Polygraph exam, background exam, written and oral exams, and final Sheriff’s interview.
  • Ability to possess a firearm and pass the Colorado POST firearms qualification.
  • Ability to pass defensive tactics arrest control (DTAC).
  • Ability to pass TASER qualification.
  • Ability to see with or without corrective lenses (well enough to read letters and reports).
  • Ability to hear with or without hearing aids and speak well enough to converse on phone or radio.
  • Ability to climb, stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, twist, reach, and lift to 40 lbs.
  • Ability to write, type, and perform other office duties.
  • Read and write the English language with conciseness and understandable vocabulary.
  • Preferred bilingual in English and Spanish.
