Job Description:

Lake County School District is looking for a Transportation Director/Driver to join our leadership team and ensure safe, reliable, and caring transportation services for our students. This position combines two important responsibilities: leading the district’s transportation program and serving as a back up school bus driver when needed.

Salary Grade: $30.00-$38.00/hour     ($35,100 - $44,460 annually paid over 12 pays)  EXCELLENT benefits include PTO, Health, Vision, Dental and Life Insurance!  Great Calendar, which roughly follows the LCSD Calendar.   FLSA: Exempt

 

Work Year:  195 days (15 more days than the drivers) of 6 hours in length; day may be split with longer mid-day break, to accommodate bus route monitoring times.  Calendar created with COO OR follows the 195 calendar.

Reports To: Chief Operations Officer

Key Responsibilities

Transportation Leadership  

  • Supervise and support school bus drivers and the department mechanic.
  • Oversee daily bus routes, field trips, and activity trips, ensuring coverage and efficiency.
  • Manage driver schedules, assign special activity trips, and maintain calendars and records.
  • Train, evaluate, and mentor school bus drivers and small vehicle drivers.
  • Coordinator driver coverage during absences between substitute drivers; cover as driver when needed.
  • Monitor fuel, vehicle inspections, and maintenance needs in coordination with the mechanic.
  • Ensure compliance with state and federal transportation laws, safety regulations, and district policies.
  • Process timesheets, maintain personnel files, and oversee department budget/cost center concerns.
  • Track all vehicle mileage for state reporting.
  • Address parent, staff, and student inquiries regarding transportation services.
  • Efficiently download, store, and review bus video footage as needed
  • Investigate and follow up on incident reports, communicating outcomes with staff and schools. 
  • Lead annual safety refreshers and professional development for drivers.
  • Has cell phone available during the school day, and while buses are on additional trips, to respond in case of emergency.
  • Follow all provisions in the AFSCME agreement.

Driving Duties (only on as-needed basis)

  • Safely operate a school bus for regular routes, activity trips, or as backup when needed.
  • Maintain student safety and discipline while transporting students.
  • Conduct pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections.
  • Model safe and professional driving practices for the team.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • 2–3 years of experience in transportation, supervision, or school district operations preferred.
  • Valid Colorado Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with required school bus/passenger endorsements (or ability to obtain within 3 months).
  • Department of Transportation (DOT) physical exam (required within 3 months).
  • First Aid and CPR certification (within 3 months).
  • Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with drivers, staff, students, and families.
  • Working knowledge of bus operations, safety standards, and scheduling systems
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Excel for tracking vehicle mileage.
  • Excellent customer service and community communication skills.
  • Bilingual in Spanish preference, though not required.

Work Environment

  • Full-time position with benefits.

  • Mix of office-based supervisory duties and occasional hands-on driving responsibilities.

  • Moderate noise and exposure to weather when working around buses.
  • Role requires flexibility and the ability to respond to emergencies.
