Wage: $18-$20/hr.
Location: Canon City, CO.
Job Description
Carman 1 is an apprentice of the carman craft including air brake operation and repair, and, as such, will participate in inspecting, repairing and maintaining railcars consistent with industry standards, company directives, and federal regulations. The Carman will use hand tools, power tools, welding and cutting equipment and measuring instruments; may be called upon to operate forklifts, cranes and tractors.
Essential Functions
- Works with Shop Foreman Lead Carman to maintain a deferred maintenance program for the rolling stock fleet of 23 pieces of equipment, while scheduling all FRA required 49 CFR 232/238 COT&S cycles
- Planning, organizing and facilitating jobs as assigned by the Lead Carman including print reading and interpretation
- Perform daily Carman inspection of Passenger train when necessary and train new Carman/Mechanical Department employees
- Audit shop equipment for potential repairs
- Trouble shoot jobs and equipment needed to complete jobs
- Communicate plans and projects effectively to other Carman
- Safely use rigging and lifting equipment
- Maintain the highest standards concerning quality of workmanship and safe work performance
- Maintain clean work practices and understand the effects of dirt and debris
- Understand and adhere to our safety culture
- Demonstrate a willingness to work with other Department Leads to complete Shop goals
- Take direction and instruction well
- Other responsibilities may be assigned according to the needs of the business
- Assist in special projects, as needed
- Actively participate in safety meetings
- Provide daily progress updates to Lead Carman
Education/Minimum Requirements
- Must be 18 years or older
- Highschool diploma or equivalent
- 2+ years of experience working in a railroad mechanical car shop preferred
- 49 CFR 232/238 Single Car Air Test qualified preferred
- Certificate from a Trade School and/or years of welding/heavy equipment experience and can pass a weld test
Knowledge
- Proficient with Passenger Freight Air-brake systems to include D-22, 26-c, ABDW/ABDX preferred
- Experience as a pipe-fitter in relation to Railroad air brake systems
- Proficient in layout, fit-up and fabrication
- Proficient in mig arc welding. Tig welding a plus
- Proficient in structural repair, crack repair, and rust mitigating metal work
- Have a demonstrated ability to perform light machining, utilizing drills, taps, etc
Working Conditions/Essential Job Functions
- Fluency in English
- Exposed to extreme temperatures
- Heavy lifting – up to 50 lbs
- Prolonged walking, sitting and standing
- Work in elevated position, climbing, bending, stooping, pushing and pulling
