Location: Mesa, CO.

Job Description:

Summer Patrol Level 3 will demonstrate consistent competence in all the mountain and equipment functions of Patrol.  Patrol level 3 will be leaders amongst their peers in providing effective care and transport of injured, sick, and lost guests. They will patrol the mountain for our guests’ safety and biking enjoyment and maintain good public relations. Patrol Level 3 will demonstrate autonomous skilled competence in performing all assignments and will consistently follow all Powderhorn Mountain Resort policies and procedures, all applicable laws (federal, state, and local), and all health and sanitation codes. Patrol Level 3 has completed Patrol Level 2 as well as Patrol Level 1 and Patrol Trainee

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Patrol Level 3 will be expected to proficiently demonstrate the skills required of Patrol Level 2, with the addition of duties to include, but not limited to; 

  • Demonstrate competence in all computer skills needed for Powderhorn Patrol operational functions.  
  • Properly develop and provide input to the scheduling of Patrol using the digital format. 
  • Demonstrate the ability to lead a Lift Evaluation team in the case of an emergency.
  • Active contribution in at least one Powderhorn Patrol Skills Team (Team Leader or major contributor)
  • Demonstrate basic competence of supervising bike patrol operations of entire mountain.
  • Attendance and Completion of all required pre-season patrol training
  • Attendance and completion of summer lift operation training
  • Willingness and Capability to function at any time during an assigned patrol shift as a Powderhorn Lift Operator as requested by Powderhorn Operations

 

 

 

Education:

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Current EMT certification or:
    • OEC certification with: 
      • significant operational contribution as determined by the Patrol Supervisor. For example: major Patrol Manual update, major subject matter expert training program contribution, outstanding contribution to Patrol Skills Team, etc. (Formal proposal must be given to Patrol Supervisor and accepted before beginning work on a significant operational contribution. The ongoing significant operational contribution must be accepted and approved by the Patrol Supervisor each year in order to maintain Patrol Level 3 status with an OEC).
  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer

 

 

 

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must be able and willing to perform all of the patrol job functions in any Powderhorn Resort terrain and in all conditions.  
  • Strong Mountain Bike rider, capable of riding at Powderhorn in any type of conditions, while in full control and at an emergency response pace. 
  • Demonstrate willingness to continually train and improve their ability.
  • Must be an Expert level Mountain biker capable of efficiently and safely riding all green and blue Powderhorn bike trails
  • Must be able to efficiently and safely ride at least 90% of black and double black terrain while also able to quickly, efficiently, and safely walk with their bike for the remaining 10% of black/double-black bike trails
  • Competent (or greater) performance evaluation for prior 2 performance evaluations.
  • Attendance and Completion of all required pre-season patrol training
  • Complete 8 hours of rescue and extrication training/Mtn Bike Clinic C.E.’s per season
  • Attend One Manager Approved Skills Team Training Event per Season
  • Must be able to efficiently and safely operate a UTV/ATV for both utility and rescue purposes. Level 1 Patroller: green rated ATV/UTV roads/trails. Level 2 Patroller: blue rated UTV/ATV roads/trails. Level 3 Patroller: Black rated ATV/UTV roads/trails.
  • Attendance and Completion of all required pre-season patrol training
  • Attendance and completion of summer lift operation training

 

 

  • Must have at least 3-5 years* as a Patroller (Patrol Level 2/Patrol Level 1/Trainee)
    • Patrollers advancing to Level 3 with less than 5 years of service will be required to make a significant operational contribution as determined by the Patrol Supervisor. E.g. Major Patrol Manual update, major subject matter expert training contribution, outstanding contribution to Patrol Skills Team, etc. (Formal proposal must be given to Patrol Supervisor and accepted before beginning work on a significant operational contribution. Once completed, the significant operational contribution must be accepted and approved by the Patrol Supervisor prior to step increase eligibility).

 

 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS 

This position is for as many as four days per week and may be required to work evenings, weekends and holidays.

Mountain Environment:

  • The primary physical environment in which this position works is outdoors with a high exposure level to seasonal weather, including cold, snow, wind, high sun exposure, rain, bugs, sun, high altitude, extreme heights, lightning, etc...
  • The degree of strenuous activity within the job is high. Lifting a weight of 60 pounds throughout the day for routine tasks is common.
  • Strenuous physical activity may include lifting heavy loads and biking, walking, or hiking upon uneven, challenging terrain with heavy tools or equipment,
  • Patrol work may require significant sustained cardiovascular output for a long duration.  To include multiple bouts of 30 minutes or more of strenuous extrication activity including moving of a loaded litter through precarious terrain in challenging unstable and off camber conditions, and through dense vegetation.   
  • Exposure to: Chemicals required for cleaning, de-greasing, and painting.  Ultraviolet radiation from the sun enhanced through lack of atmospheric filtration at work altitude.  Fumes produced in activities ranging from cleaning to painting.  Noise generated by snowmobiles, lift equipment, and tools may require hearing and eye protection to be worn.
  • Helmets are worn at all times when skiing, snowboarding, biking, or driving snowmobiles/ATVs
