Position Status: Substitute / As Needed - Location: Fremont RE-2 School District Transportation Department
- Reports To: Transportation Director
- Position Summary
- The Substitute Small Vehicle Route Driver safely transports students to and from school or school-related activities using district small-route vehicles in the absence of the regularly assigned driver. The substitute driver is responsible for operating district vehicles in accordance with all local, state, and federal transportation laws and district policies while maintaining a safe and orderly environment for students.
- Substitute drivers are expected to demonstrate professionalism, reliability, and the ability to safely supervise and transport students.
- Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Operate assigned school vehicle in compliance with district transportation policies and procedures as well as all local, state, and federal laws.
- Safely transport students to and from school and school-related activities.
- Perform daily pre-route and post-route safety inspections on assigned vehicle.
- Maintain appropriate student conduct to ensure the safety and well-being of all passengers.
- Complete required reports, route documentation, and other paperwork in a timely manner.
- Report accidents, incidents, or mechanical concerns immediately to transportation management or appropriate authorities.
- Administer first aid when necessary and follow district emergency procedures.
- Attend required training programs, meetings, and in-service sessions as required by the district or the State of Colorado.
- Maintain a positive working relationship with students, parents, staff, and co-workers.
- Promote a positive image of the Fremont RE-2 School District through professionalism and safe practices.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Transportation Director or administration.
- Qualifications
- Required Qualifications
- Must possess a valid Driver's License and maintain a clean driving record.
- Positive individual with neat appearance and professional demeanor.
- Proven work record demonstrating reliability, flexibility, and initiative.
- Ability to comply with all State, Federal, Colorado Department of Education, and School District transportation regulations.
- Ability to safely supervise and transport students, including students with special needs.
- Strong communication skills.
- Knowledge of student discipline strategies preferred.
- Additional Requirements
- Ability to pass required written tests and First Aid certification.
- Must pass extensive background checks.
- Must pass a Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) physical examination, including drug and alcohol testing, as required by law.

- Employment is contingent upon successful completion of all required background checks including:
- Criminal background screening and fingerprinting
- Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) background check
- Department of Transportation required screenings
- Any additional screenings required by district policy
- Physical Requirements
- The physical demands described here are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position:
- Ability to sit for extended periods while operating a vehicle.
- Ability to assist students entering and exiting the vehicle when necessary.
- Ability to respond quickly to emergencies or safety concerns.

- Terms of Employment
- Substitute positions are temporary, on-call, and as-needed. Assignments are determined by district transportation needs and availability and do not guarantee regular hours, ongoing assignments, or continued employment.
- Typical assignments may include morning and afternoon routes, with hours varying depending on district transportation needs.
- Salary/Benefits
- Compensation will be in accordance with the Fremont RE-2 Substitute Salary Schedule. Substitute employees are not eligible for district benefits.
