Job Description

Under the supervision of the Streets Foreman, performs maintenance of and repairs to streets and alleys in the Town of Buena Vista. Position must occasionally work long, non-business hours to fulfill organizational needs and respond to emergencies. On-call duties required.

JOB DUTIES The following statements are illustrative of the essential functions of the job and do not include other nonessential or peripheral duties that may be required.   • Performs a variety of manual labor in the maintenance of Town streets and infrastructure, including but not limited to digging holes and trenches, patching, debris cleanup, snow removal, shoveling materials.
  • Operates a variety of light to heavy equipment such as: tandem trucks, patch trucks, air compressors, forklifts, skid steers, loaders, backhoes, tractors, and snowplows.
  • Operates light power-driven vehicles such as pickup trucks, vans, and autos.
  • Operates power and hand tools including jackhammers, concrete saws, drills, trowels, floats, rakes, shovels, and brooms.
  • Performs construction, maintenance, and repair work of Town streets, sidewalks, alleys, parking lots and gutters including patching potholes, grading, trenching, asphalt paving, crack sealing.
  • Identifies maintenance or repair needs on assigned equipment.
  • Performs routine service on assigned vehicle including filling with gasoline, water and oil as well as checking brake systems and other safety devices.
  • Responds to public contacts in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Assists in maintaining street signs and traffic control devices.
  • Performs other duties as assigned and required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of: Performing work in a safe manner.
  • Pertinent safety standards and procedures, traffic laws, and traffic control methods.

Skills and Ability to:

  • Operate heavy equipment, including snow removal equipment.
  • Operate a variety of power and hand tools. Interpret and apply a variety of departmental policies and procedures.
  • Apply appropriate decision-making skills within the scope of work procedures.
  • Work safely and promote safe working conditions.
  • Work cooperatively with others encountered during the normal course of work.
  • Perform basic math calculations.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Education/Training: High school diploma or GED required.
  • License or Certificates: Must possess and maintain a Colorado Driver’s License. A Colorado Commercial ‘B’ driver’s license with air brake endorsement preferred but not required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

The physical demands and work environment described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the functions of the job. Work involves walking, talking, hearing, using hands to handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or paper, and reaching with hands and arms.

  • Environment: Most duties of this position are performed in an outside environment involving frequent exposure to extreme heat or cold, to wet weather conditions, and to dry, dusty, and noisy environments. Occasional exposure to concrete dust, hot asphalt, fumes, solvents, grease, and oil.
  • Physical: Requires frequent heavy lifting/carrying (50 lbs. and over), pushing, pulling, reaching, climbing, crawling and twisting. Must be able to walk on uneven and/or slippery surfaces, stand, bend, stoop and sit for extended periods of time. Work requires physical and visual capabilities to operate passenger vehicles, trucks, and motorized equipment. Must be able to use both hands and fingers and perform repetitive motions. Requires hearing, speaking, and correctable near and far vision. Must be able to work around machinery and moving vehicles in traffic environments. Must be able to read and write and understand directions.
  • Vision: The employee must have good close, distance, and peripheral vision, as well as depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Hearing: The employee must be able to talk and hear in order to communicate information and maintain awareness of the environment. Employee must be able to use a telephone
