Abraxas Youth and Family Services in Canon City, CO is seeking a Recreation Specialist, CTRS or CTRS Eligible, to plan and implement activity services for assigned program, which involves defining and implementing treatment goals as a member of the interdisciplinary treatment team and providing continuous patient care, observation, interaction, and role modeling to patients under the direction of the Director of Clinical Services. Skills:

  • Ability to communicate in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Basic computer knowledge.

Qualifications:

Education: Bachelors Degree from an accredited college or university in recreational therapy, music therapy, occupational therapy, or Masters in art therapy. Other appropriate Human Services degree may be substituted.

Experience: Related experience, with knowledge of psychiatric patient care techniques with understanding of mental illness, preferred.

Licensure: Certification by state and/or national governing body in of the following areas: art, recreation, or music therapy or eligible.

Summary and Responsibilities of the Position

  • Responsible for conducting recreation therapy activities at the treatment site.
  • Assists Senior Recreation Therapist with scheduled operations of art sessions, sports, team building activities, leisure education, milieu observation, physical fitness programming.
  • Assists in the coordination of all volunteers based recreational activities.
  • Participate in all clinical staffings and departmental meetings relevant to recreational therapy services.
  • Assists and co-leads recreational activities to include art sessions; team sports; leisure education; team building; and physical fitness activities.
  • Attends staffings, treatment team meetings, and management team meetings.
  • Assists in coordinating all volunteer-based recreational activities. Identifies potential conflicts in client interaction and makes recommendations for crisis intervention.
  • Monitors client behavior in the milieu to promote safety and enhance personal growth.
  • Documents client participation with clinically appropriate methods.
  • Monitors and evaluates physical fitness programming in order to facilitate physical health.
  • Develops and maintains appropriate professional boundaries between self, staff, patients, and all other professionals as identified in the Code of Ethics Policy.
  • Adheres to confidentiality requirements.
  • Adhere to Abraxas Youth And family services attendance policy; work overtime as required, to ensure deadlines are met.
  • Comply with company safety rules; take appropriate corrective action to ensure work is performed in a safe manner and without injury to self or others.
  • Communicate effectively with all levels of staff in a manner that promotes team spirit and a sense of cooperation.
  • Support and promote the Sanctuary Model and its Commitments.

Minimum Requirements

  • Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age.
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Recreation Therapy one (1) year experience in training and/or residential care; or a combination of education and experience as approved.
  • Certification as Recreation Therapy Specialist.
  • CPR and First Aid Certification - Preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Must pass background check and drug test.
