Job Description

The Recreation Program Coordinator is responsible for planning, executing, monitoring, and evaluating youth and adult recreation programs. This includes, but is not limited to adult athletics leagues and tournaments, youth sports leagues and programs, youth and adult fitness classes, outdoor recreation programs, wellness opportunities, fine arts and leisure programs, and seasonally appropriate recreational activities.

  • Organize, supervise, execute, and evaluate youth and adult recreation programs.
  • Develop new activities for year-round or seasonal recreation programming.
  • Work with Recreation Director to set appropriate fees and venues for programs.
  • Recruit, hire, train, and monitor volunteers, contracted instructors, and seasonal staff.
  • Develop marketing materials related to recreation programs, leagues, and activities through print, radio, web, email, and social media.
  • Manage program registration and participant payments through online, in-person, or drop-in processes. Update the online registration system (ACTIVE Net) and recreation website with current program offerings.
  • Assist with the development and management of the department budget for program expenses. Inventory, repair, and purchase equipment required for programming and recreational facilities.
  • Communicate field use schedules and field maintenance needs to recreation and parks staff.
  • Communicate Community Center schedule needs to recreation staff.
  • Work with program partners to offer collaborative programming, including Buena Vista High School sports teams, local sports clubs, and neighboring Park and Recreation Departments.
  • Schedule gym usage with Buena Vista Schools and Darren Patterson Christian Academy.
  • Schedule officials and staff for youth and adult sports.
  • Participate in Colorado Parks and Recreation Association program opportunities and trainings.
  • Communicate additional duties as assigned with other department staff members, when needed.
  • Drag, chalk, paint, and perform other field maintenance tasks to ensure athletic fields are ready for practices and games.
  • Sweep, mop, and perform other gym maintenance tasks to ensure gym facilities are ready for practices and games.
  • Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES Supervises part-time and seasonal staff, contract instructors, interns, and volunteers.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • Methods and practices related to programming of inclusive public recreation and sports activities.
  • Rules, playing standards, and governing bodies for youth and adult sports, including soccer, basketball, volleyball, football, baseball, softball, and pickleball.
  • Safety standards and best practice for sports and recreation activities, including protocol for administering first aid. Risk management, including limiting liability associated with public recreation programs.
  • Computer-based record keeping, and tracking systems related to registering and tracking youth and adult participation in recreation and sports programs.
  • Best coaching practices and skill development progressions for various ages and ability levels of multiple sports.
  • Best practices for facility, gym floor, ballfield, and soccer field maintenance and preparation.

Skills and Ability to:

  • Design and produce written and multi-media marketing material, including publication of a schedule/catalog of recreational activities.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Use personal computer and smartphone for communication, word processing, database management, spreadsheet applications, and website management.
  • Create schedules and brackets for youth and adult sports leagues and tournaments.
  • Develop and follow lesson plans for various youth sports and recreation programs.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, participants, parents, and volunteers.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Education/Training:

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with course work in recreation programming, sports administration, or related field preferred.

License or Certificates:

1) Must possess and maintain Colorado driver’s license;

2) Valid FirstAid and CPR certification or must acquire certifications within three months of date of hire.

Work Experience:

1) Minimum of three years of experience in recreation programming and event coordination or related field;

2) Experience supervising the work of others, including volunteers is helpful, but not required;

3) Some small, rural community experience preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

The physical demands and work environment described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the functions of the job. Work involves walking, talking, hearing, using hands to handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or paper, and reaching with hands and arms.

  • Environment: Some duties of this position are performed in an office environment and involve sitting at a computer for extended periods. Some duties are performed outdoors including in inclement weather, uneven terrain, and extreme noise.
  • Physical: Frequent sitting, standing, step climbing, and walking. Must be able to operate motor vehicles. Employee should be capable of lifting and moving numerous types of equipment. Employee must be capable of lifting 40 pounds repeatedly. May require climbing, balancing, bending, stooping, squatting, kneeling, and/or crouching. Vision: The employee must have good close, distance, and peripheral vision, as well as depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Hearing: The employee must be able to talk and hear in order to communicate information and maintain awareness of the environment. Employee must be able to use a telephone.
  • Work Schedule: This position may require the employee to work irregular hours, depending on the schedule for recreation. Some night and weekend hours will be required.
