About Barn Owl Precision Ag (BOPA)

At BOPA, we’re building the future of autonomy for small and mid-sized farms. Our compact, intelligent robots (ANTs) perform precision agricultural tasks like weeding, planting, and nutrient management - helping farmers cut labor costs, reduce chemical use, and increase sustainability.

We are a Seed-stage startup with a nimble, farmer-focused team. Our goal is to design robust, scalable robotics systems that can be deployed across the globe.

Role Overview

We’re looking for a Production Engineer II to help build and stabilize the systems powering our ANT platform across cloud and on-ANT environments.

This is a hands-on role spanning backend services, infrastructure, and on-ANT runtime. You’ll work across APIs, deployment pipelines, and ROS2-based systems; improving how we deploy, monitor, and debug systems across the fleet.

This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys working across boundaries, is comfortable with ambiguity, and takes pride in building reliable, production-ready systems.

Key Responsibilities

Backend & Platform Services

  • Design and build backend services and APIs that support robot operations and data flow

  • Develop and maintain systems for communication between robot, cloud, and user-facing tools

  • Ensure reliable capture, storage, and access of data across the platform

  • Improve performance and scalability of core backend systems

Infrastructure & Reliability

  • Build and improve deployment pipelines across cloud and ANT systems (CI/CD, OTA)

  • Implement logging, monitoring, and alerting to improve system visibility and uptime

  • Identify and resolve reliability issues across services and infrastructure

  • Improve system resilience, fault tolerance, and recovery mechanisms

ANT Runtime Systems

  • Develop and maintain services running on the ANT, including ROS2-based components

  • Improve stability and performance of ANT systems under real-world conditions

  • Support communication between ANT components and external systems

  • Debug and resolve runtime issues observed in lab and field environments

Success Metrics (First 12-18 Months)

  • Systems run reliably in production with reduced crashes and downtime

  • Logging, monitoring, and alerting provide clear visibility into system health

  • Deployments are consistent, repeatable, and low-friction across cloud and robot

  • Issues are quickly identified and resolved with minimal impact to field operations

  • Data from ANT runtime is reliably captured and available for downstream use

Required Qualifications

  • 4+ years of professional software engineering experience building production systems

  • Strong proficiency in Python and experience building backend services and APIs

  • Experience working with cloud infrastructure (e.g. AWS) and containerized systems (Docker)

  • Experience improving system reliability through logging, monitoring, and debugging

  • Ability to design and maintain software systems that span multiple components or environments

  • Comfortable working across backend, infrastructure, and runtime systems in ambiguous, fast-moving environments

Bonus Points

  • Experience with ROS2 or working with software systems on robots or edge devices

  • Familiarity with distributed systems and service-to-service communication

  • Experience building or operating CI/CD pipelines and deployment workflows

  • Exposure to observability tooling (logging, metrics, tracing)

  • Experience working with real-world, field-deployed systems (e.g. robotics, IoT, or similar)

Our Culture

At BOPA, we value practical impact, humility, and speed of iteration. We test everything in the field, learn fast, and build with farmers. We believe diverse perspectives lead to better designs, and we’re committed to fostering inclusion and collaboration.

Why Join Us

  • Mission-Driven Work: Build robots that transform farming and rural economies

  • Real-World Impact: See your engineering work deployed in active farm operations

  • Hands-On Innovation: Work directly on full-stack robotics systems

  • Fast Learning Curve: Collaborate across hardware, software, and autonomy to expand your technical range, skills and experience

  • Equity & Growth: Share in the company’s success at scale
