About the Position:
The Plant Mechanic is a dynamic role that involves diagnosing, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining equipment and facilities.  On any given day, the Plant Mechanic may perform welding activities, program and install PLCs, calibrate, repair, and maintain instruments and control systems, purchase parts and supplies, and assist with the general maintenance of facilities and grounds. We are searching for a motivated individual who is willing to learn and work as part of our highly skilled team.

About the Utilities Department:
 
The wastewater division at the City of Grand Junction is responsible for managing and treating the city's wastewater. The Persigo wastewater treatment plant is the largest treatment works in the western Rocky Mountain region, with a capacity of 12.5 million gallons per day (mgd). This facility uses advanced technologies such as bio trickling filters for odor control, primary clarifiers, aeration basins, anaerobic digesters, UV disinfection, and an effluent diffuser to treat wastewater to a high standard.

The division has undertaken innovative projects such as developing renewable natural gas from wastewater treatment to be used as vehicle fuel, expanding treatment plant capacity, and developing biosolids beneficial reuse programs for the community.
The division is also responsible for maintaining and operating the extensive sewer network of the city and county, which includes over 600 miles of sewer lines and 26 lift stations. The 40 professionals in the wastewater division are organized into five teams: collections, operations, maintenance, laboratory, and industrial pretreatment. These teams work collaboratively to ensure that the city's wastewater is managed efficiently and effectively, with minimal impact on the environment.

Duties

What You'll Do: 

  • Perform maintenance and repair on water and wastewater treatment plants and related equipment and facilities.
  • Install, align, test, maintain, recondition, troubleshoot, and repair a variety of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and hydraulic systems, components, and parts; replace piping and recondition valves.  
  • Operate and maintain a variety of hand tools, power tools, pneumatic tools, trucks, and other equipment in the performance of assigned duties. 
  • Maintain and track various assigned systems, including alarm, pumping, chemical, and/or specialized electrical systems.
  • Perform specialized installations, repairs, and modifications; track related instruments, controls, and computer databases associated with assigned units.

Qualifications

This position is a safety-sensitive position, which means you will be subject to random drug screens due to the nature of the work performed.

What We're Looking For: 

  • Four (4) years of plant maintenance and repair experience. 
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.; supplemented by specialized training in the areas of mechanical equipment maintenance and repair 
  • Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid Colorado driver's license.
  • Some assignments in this classification may also require possession of, or the ability to obtain, a Colorado Class A Commercial driver's license and/or a Water/Wastewater Operator's D License and/or Collections/Distribution I certificate.
Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
