ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
1. Provides education through in-services and continuing education programs to enhance staff skill levels, including implementation of Periop 101, as needed by the department
2. Ensures current employees are knowledgeable, competent, and well trained in their respective areas within Surgical Services.
3. Provides education to enhance staff skill levels, develops education programs, and designs competencies.
4. Modifies educational program content based on observation, feedback, outcomes, and evaluation.
5. Encourages and assists staff in identifying their learning needs.
6. Assists perioperative team members in bridging theory and practical application.
7. Collaborates with a multidisciplinary team to solve problems and change processes to improve function, the quality of patient care, and support systems.
8. Participates in surgical services leadership meetings to provide input and receive feedback regarding educational needs of the department.
9. Forges a partnership between managers and the educator role by:
a. Building relationships by guiding, mentoring, and advising managers and staff.
b. Communicating effectively with management and administration.
c. Participating in crisis management for errors requiring a root cause analysis (RCA).
10. Revises and updates orientation program information and learning resources as change occurs.
11. Coordinates resources for appropriate progressive orientation of new staff members including competency skills check offs.
12. Supports new staff in establishing progressive expectations of clinical performance, competencies, goals, and opportunities.
13. Develops and supports preceptors to ensure adequate training and support of new orientees.
14. Monitors orientees as they advance through specialty areas.
15. Establishes follow-up meetings with orientees. Documents and follows up on identified plans of action, next steps and recording of orientee(s) progress.
16. Researches, creates, and revises data driven best practice surgical services clinical policies and procedures in collaboration with surgical services manager.
17. Monitors and improves clinical practice and resource utilization while complying with regulatory requirements and national recommended guidelines. National guidelines such as but not limited to: AORN, AST, SGNA, IAHCSMM, ASPAN, AAMI
a. Contributes to upgrading of standards of practice as knowledge increases and practices change.
b. Participates in quality improvement programs.
c. Effectively supports safety and quality processes and outcomes.
d. Initiates performance improvement course of action.
18. Provides a service to help staff develop educational materials and presentations.
19. Shares relevant research findings with staff and colleagues formally and informally.
20. Ensures that staff member competencies and skills check offs area completed within
established timelines
