GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

This position is responsible for officiating adult and youth sports leagues being conducted at an assigned facility. The job requires availability in the evenings, weekends and holidays. The position will start prior to the leagues season and continue through the end of each different specified league.

REPORTING AND ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS: Reports to the Recreation Supervisor. Works collaboratively within their own Department and with other City Departments, as well as with other organizations, to comply with policies and procedures and to officiate sports leagues.

  • Officiate and control Salida Parks and Recreation leagues in a confident, appropriate manner.
  • Ensure all participants understand and comply with game rules and assess penalties when needed.
  • Make game calls with confidence and knowledge of league rules.
  • Keep track of event start times and start or stop play as necessary.
  • Ensure teams have appropriate equipment. Inspect both players and equipment for any issues.
  • Set up activity equipment such as tables, instruments, electronics, etc.
  • Ensure participants' safety.
  • Help create a fun and positive environment for all participants and fans.
  • Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Comfortable to work with people of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Must represent Salida Parks and Recreation in a positive way.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and public speaking skills.
  • Strong creativity and socialization skills.
  • Prior experience in the specified sport is a plus but not required.

EDUCATIONAND EXPERIENCE:

No previous experience is required, but must work well with all age groups, be a team player and be prompt and courteous. There will be mandatory training before the start of any league season.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in high, precarious or confined places and a variety of outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Requires the ability to maintain body equilibrium when bending, stooping, crouching, reaching and/or stretch arms, legs or other parts of body and to physically maneuver over and/or upon varying terrain, surfaces or physical structures. Specific sensory requirements include close, distance and peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with arms and hands; speak and hear. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and taste or smell.
