Job Description:

Basic Purpose of the Job
Under general direction, performs manual labor and equipment operation for the repair, maintenance, construction and turf management of parks, sports complex, cemetery, recreation and open space facilities and infrastructure. Learns and adheres to city safety standards.

  • Perform manual labor and equipment operation for equipment associated with the repair, turf management, maintenance and construction of parks, sports complex, recreation and open space facilities and infrastructure. Assist other City departments and other public works personnel in performing tasks within the department.
  • Install, adjust, maintain and repair city irrigation systems including timers, valves and controllers; repair a wide variety of sprinkler heads and lines; locate and repair water breaks.
  • Inspect, clean, and repair playground equipment, picnic tables, barbeques and other related parks, sports complex, skate park, restroom, shelter and cemetery equipment and facilities. Maintain accurate records of activities.
  • Operate maintenance equipment and power tools including dump trucks, backhoes, front loaders, mowers, edger's and blowers; maintain hand tools and assigned equipment.
  • Maintain turf, plants, and landscaping by irrigating, mowing, weeding, trimming, and fertilizing. Rake leaves and remove snow, ice and other debris from walks, trails and other facilities.
  • Apply or assist in application of herbicides, fungicides, pesticides, and mulch in accordance with product recommendations; maintain records of fertilizers and chemicals used.
  • Repair and maintain benches, tables and guardrails; assist in repair of roads, walks, buildings, and mechanical equipment.
  • Train lower level park division and/or seasonal workers.

Job Requirements:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); supplemented by specialized training in construction and
    maintenance of parks facilities.
  • Four (4) years of responsible experience performing public works operations, construction and maintenance work in the
    assigned area of responsibility.
  • This position is subject to non-standard working hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Knowledge of standard construction and maintenance practices relating to parks operations.
Licensures & Certificates (must be active and current.):
  • Current Colorado Class A or B Commercial Drivers license preferred; must be able to obtain within 90 days of start date;
    must have acceptable driving record.
  • Entry - Must be able to obtain First Aid & CPR Training at this level.
  • Mid - Must obtain annual training in 1 of the following: Irrigation Training, Herbicide Application Training, Turf Care
    Training, or Playground Safety.
  • Senior - Required to have Certified Playground Safety Inspector Certification; Must obtain annual training in 2 of the
    following: Advanced Irrigation Training, Herbicide Application Training, Basic Horticulture, or Fertilizer & Composting
    Training.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
Requires ability to perform heavy manual labor. Strenuous physical work requiring ability to lift a maximum of 100 pounds; frequent lifting, carrying, walking and standing, hand/eye coordination. The employee frequently is required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Frequent hand/eye coordination for operation of personal computer, and use of hands to handle small parts; vision for reading and preparing written reports and documents; frequent speech communication, hearing and listening to maintain communications with employees and citizens. Requires driving and walking during inclement weather. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles; extreme cold and extreme heat; chemicals. The employee is occasionally exposed to vibration. The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud.
