Job Description

HRRMC's Laboratory Department has a PRN opening as a Medical Laboratory Technician. This position is eligible for an 8 % pay differential , retirement savings plan, employee assistance program, and an employee wellness program. 

SUMMARY

MLT's provide information for patient diagnosis and treatment by performing laboratory tests in a variety of laboratory sections including, but not limited to; toxicology, chemistry, hematology, immunology, serology, urinalysis, microbiology.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Performs all patient testing per protocol in all laboratory departments

2. Performs established protocol for instrument preventive maintenance/function verification.

3. Organizes work load so as to complete testing in the most appropriate manner.

4. Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses

5. Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.

6. Adheres to established quality control policies, documents all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations performed.

7. Adheres to the laboratory's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance and is responsible for assuring that all remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate.

8. Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems or immediately notify the technical supervisor, clinical consultant or director.

9. Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.

10. Follow established protocol in maintaining records of patient test results and calling of critical test results.

11. Responsible to review all testing performed during their shift to ensure that acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained.

12. Assist with section supervisor duties as assigned under the direct supervision of the laboratory supervisor

I. Specimen collection/clerical

A. Collect Specimens

  •  Explain rationale for laboratory tests and patient preparation to patients.
  •  Collect all types of specimens following prescribed guidelines.
  •  Evaluate and solve problems related to specimen collection.

B. Perform Pre-analytic specimen handling

  •  Accession and distribute specimens to laboratory departments according to prescribed guidelines.
  •  Measure, aliquot and label specimens when appropriate.
  •  Prepare samples for transport to reference laboratory.
  •  Evaluate and solve problems related to pre-analytic specimen handling.

C. Perform Receptionist/Clerk functions

  •  Answer and direct phone calls.
  •  Complete laboratory requisitions billing forms.
  •  Follow laboratory's procedures for reporting, retrieving and maintaining records of patient test results. 
  • Evaluate and solve problems related to billing and laboratory records. 
  • Use computers to manage data through input, storage and retrieval.

Requirements

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Minimum of Associate's Degree in Medical Laboratory Technician (Chemical or Biological Sciences) or Medical Laboratory technician from an accredited institution.

Two years’ experience preferred, but not required

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • National recognized laboratory certification such as ASCP, NCA or AMT is required.
  • Current BLS certification

VACCINATION EXEMPTIONS ACCEPTED
