Job Description:

Under direct supervision of the City Manager, this position will manage of daily Golf Pro Shop operations, including managing and tracking play, protecting and controlling assets, supervising volunteers and other golf staff, assisting with all merchandising and marketing functions, managing tournaments and providing other professional services to ensure an exceptional golf experience.   

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Direct Golf Course Club House staff in the administration and managing of golf shop operations.

  • Supervise the scheduling and training golf shop volunteers and other personnel

  • Ensures that inventory, tax, and financial records are maintained according to City policies and are accurate.

  • Control and manage play.

  • Ensure guest check-in and fee collection in coordination with the starter;

  • Either Self or through subordinates, oversee the purchasing, receipt, display, inventory, control, promotion and sales of merchandise.

  • Be familiar with and promote all club activities and services.

  • Assist patrons, oversee the management of the Men’s and Ladies Club members handicap programs.

  • Planning and budgeting for operations.

  • Managing tournaments and outings. 

  • Answers complaints and questions regarding golf operations activities.

  • Promote all club activities and services.

  • Responsible for proper opening and closing procedures as needed on shift.

  • Performs facility walk-through for observation of usage areas.

  • Ensures a clean and safe environment by checking cleanliness of facilities and reporting or performing any custodial needs that require attention.

  • Operates cash register to perform financial transactions for daily admission to the golf course and pro shop sales.

  • Checks and balances cash reports of personnel and maintains books in an orderly, neat and accountable fashion.

  • Accurately completes forms and reports as necessary.

  • Do bank deposits.

  • Issues refund checks;

  • Processes petty cash reimbursements.

  • Prepares monthly and annual reports.

  • Provide golf instructions and clinics that is consistent with instructional methods, policies and procedures.

  • Provides excellent customer services, professional advice and assistance to all patrons;

  • Conduct must be in a professional manner and maintain a professional image at all times.

  • Ensure that the Starter and Ranger positions are covered.

  • Ensure that the Driving range is picked up and stocked as needed.

  • Oversee the setup and tear down for every event.

  • Assist the Golf Superintendent as needed in aerification and care of the course.

  • Ensure that staff has the supplies needed for daily functions. This would include the proper cash for the drawers.

  • Through subordinates, oversee that that the Clubhouse is orderly and clean at all times.

  • Order merchandise to ensure that the Gift Shop is stocked.

  • Oversee the Snack Shack activities to ensure the venders are in compliance with their lease and providing the expected service to the Clubhouse.

QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.   • Knowledge of golf clubhouse management, USGA rules governing golf course activities, and sound merchandising principles.      Basic knowledge of general office procedures and methods, including excellent telephone skills.  Ability to input and process information on POS systems, and other similar applicable computer software applications.

  • Ability to understand and maintain excellent cash control and maintain accurate bookkeeping records.

  • Ability to organize and monitor multiple golf functions

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, officials and the public.

  • Ability to perform moderate physical work and to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.

  • Ability to stand, sit, lift, walk, pinch, grasp, twist, climb, bend, kneel, reach, pick, and perform a wide variety of similar body movements.

  • Possess strong interpersonal skills and communicate effectively both verbally and written form.

  • Possess hand/eye coordination adequate to operate a telephone system, typewriter, computer, calculator and golf cart and motor vehicle.

  • Ability to talk and hear in person and by phone.

  • Ability to see and read records, reports and other information.

  • Must establish and maintain effective working relationship with employees, supervisors and the general public. At least 19 years of age or older.  Complete the requirements of Level I PGA membership and maintain an active classification in the PGA of America.

  • CPR and First Aid certifications are required within 6 months of employment.

  • Schedule of working hours could include early mornings, evenings, holidays and weekends.

  • Possess valid driver’s license.  Must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check. 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE 

  • High School Graduate. Two years’ experience working as a pro shop starter, either public or private golf course. 

LANGUAGE SKILLS 

  • Proficient in English. Other languages helpful.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS 

  • Basic Math skills.

  • Must be able to concentrate on tasks with many distractions.
  • Ability to perform moderate physical work and lift50 pounds and to occasionally lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Possess hand/eye/foot coordination adequate to perform rescues, maintenance & first-aid.
  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, twist, reach, bend, grasp, kneel and perform a variety of similar body movements;  ability to stand and sit for extended periods of time.
