Job Description:
Performs clerical duties and technical duties to support the Library, answers patron requests for information and assistance, provides service at the circulation desk, and assists with library programs.

Patron Assistance – 55%
- Greets and assists patrons in a friendly, professional manner.
- Answers basic questions about library services, programs, and materials.
- Answers the phone and routes calls.
- Guides patrons in searching the catalog and stacks.
- Helps access databases and navigate the Internet.
- Assists with making copies, faxes, or scans.
- Assists patrons on public computers.
- Requests ILL materials for patrons.
- Monitors and responds to patron behavior issues following established policies.
- Assists with opening and closing duties.
Circulation – 35%
- Checks out and renews materials using Koha ILS.
- Assists with courier.
- Sorts and routes materials to their proper location to assist patrons with borrowing materials.
- Issues and updates library cards.
- Collects and records fines and fees.
- Assists with collection weeding.
- Shelves books, DVDS, and other materials accurately according to classification systems.
- Maintains the order and appearance of library shelves and public areas.
Programming – 5%
- Assists with preparing displays, bulletin boards, and program materials.
- Assists in delivering programs to audiences of all ages in and out of the library.
- Collaborates with co-workers to help plan the annual Summer Reading Program.
Other Duties – 5%
- Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
- Library operations, services, circulation principles, practices, and procedures.
- Classification systems (e.g., Dewey Decimal System)
- Library databases, catalogs, and software.
- Familiarity with library policies related to patron confidentiality, fines, lost items, and safety procedures.
- Computers, tablets and other devices, software, application, iOS/Android, Microsoft Office, social media and internet browsers.
- Print and online reference resources.
Skilled in:
- Reference Interviewing.
- Using and troubleshooting a variety of computers and mobile electronic devices.
- Problem-solving and creativity.
- Windows, MS Office Suite, and Publisher.
- Using Prospector.
- Using Innovative Interfaces, including Koha or another comparable automated library system.
- Customer services, including dealing with difficult patrons and volatile situations.
- Using library databases, online catalogs, and digital platforms (e-books, audiobooks, etc.).
- Effective oral and written communication skills for interacting with patrons, staff, and vendors.
- Strong organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize tasks and maintain accurate records.
Ability to:
- Accurately handle cash transactions, fines, and account balances.
- Operate various office equipment, including copiers.
- Instruct and assist patrons individually while using library resources and technology.
- Maintain a calm, professional demeanor in challenging situations, including enforcing library policies diplomatically.
- Work cooperatively and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Work with confidential information.
- Perform duties independently and with initiative.
- Work in a fast-paced environment while being able to maintain a professional and courteous attitude.
- Handle multiple tasks simultaneously with frequent interruptions.
- Maintain effective working relations with co-workers.
- Adhere to strict library and legal protocols regarding patron policies.
- Learn about current trends in library services and digital library services.
- Present information and respond to questions from staff and patrons.
- Learn library methods and procedures.

Received: Works under the general supervision of the Library Director.
Exercised: None.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE and/or EDUCATION:
- High School Diploma or equivalent, or one to two years related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Field of study business, computer or office management.
Other Requirements:
- Must possess a valid current state-issued driver’s license and not be under suspension, revocation or denial nor have any prior alcohol and/or drug related driving offenses within the last five years. A driving record search will be conducted on all applicants prior to employment and will be subject to observation throughout their employment.
- Successful candidates must pass a background investigation and physical examination in accordance with job duties prior to employment.
- Applicants will be required to undergo drug testing prior to employment and may be subject to further drug and alcohol testing throughout their employment as per City policy

The employee must on occasion lift and/or move up to 50 pounds with or without assistance. Requires the dexterity, agility, and ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds without injuring yourself or others.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. The employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions, risk of electrical shock, dampness, direct sunlight, dust, pollen, insect stings and animals. This position does require work on the weekends and may work nights and holidays.
