Job Description:

Lead Patient Care Technician—A full-time position is currently available. The positions involve 12-hour shifts in the emergency room and on the ACU floor.

Requirements

  • High school Diploma or GED required 
  • Current Colorado Emergency Medical Technician- Basic Certification required 
  • IV certification is required and can be obtained within three months of the hiring date.
  • Current AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) for HealthCare Providers Certification is required  
  • Two (2) years of healthcare experience (pre-hospital, ED, and/or patient care) preferred 
  • Good interpersonal and organizational skills. 
  • Can read/comprehend verbal and written instructions
  • Able to make decisions under pressure
  • Able to work independently  
  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds frequently, push and pull up to 75 pounds

The Lead Patient Care Technician (LPCT) oversees the training or precepting of new employees. Creating onboarding documents and other training. Working with the Clinical Resource Nurse and the Chief Nursing Officer ( CNO) on schedules for the technicians. Managing and organizing meetings, as well as providing training for technicians. Working as a PCT on the floor, providing basic health care and support to patients during their stay at St. Vincent Health. The main duties include monitoring patients' health and vital signs, assisting patients with basic needs. Providing support to nurses and providers in the emergency department and the Acute care unit. The lead patient care technician with work with occupational therapy to create and manage the activities for the patients on the unit. 

  • Create and maintain the onboarding and training program for new hires
  • Work with the Clinical Resource Nurse and the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) on scheduled patient care for Techs and Certified Nurse Aides. 
  • Schedule and organize tech meetings at least quarterly
  • Working with the CNO to maintain skills training for current staff 
  • Acting as the activities coordinator for the Swing Bed program
  • Creating, in conjunction with the occupational therapy department, a monthly calendar for the unit. 
  • Delegate or execute activities daily with the patients and track participation  
  • Using the Acute Care Unit Guidelines of care, hospital policies/procedures, and regulatory guidelines to guide the work, the scope of practice 
  • Uses Emergency Department and Dual Tracking Emergency Department Guidelines of care, hospital policies/procedures and regulatory guidelines to guide work within scope of practice 
  • The Patient Care Technician is responsible for reporting unusual symptoms, observations, patient requests, and/or their families' requests. 
  • The Patient Care Technician shall promptly identify safety needs of patients and answer call lights. 
  • Performs various technical tasks (i.e. IV insertion, splinting, wound care, etc.) as directed by the Registered Nurse or provider according to established policies, procedures, scope of practice and care standards to provide quality patient care within hospital and/or department guidelines. 
  • Provides patient-centered care with sensitivity and respect for the human experience in a collaboration with other team members. 
  • Assists care team in achieving daily patient and family goals, to include ADL's
  • Leaves patient care area neat, tidy, and stocked with necessary supplies at the end of each shift. 
  • Communicates concerns regarding hazards or errors related to the patient to the health care team. 
  • Demonstrates effective use of clinical strategies to ensure patient and associate safety.
  • Uses Situation, Background, Assessment, and Recommendation (SBAR) communication technique. 
  • Collaborates with health care teams regarding care plan, follow-up and evaluation for patient and family. 
  • Document accurately and timely all tasks, observations, and procedures performed on the patient's record according to medical and legal standards. 
  • Maintains thorough and confidential maintenance of patient charts and records.
  • Communicate with colleagues and allied personnel regarding patient care to maintain continuity of care between departments and care providers. 
  • Facilitates room turnover between patients, stocking, and exchanging oxygen tanks in the Acute Care Unit. 
  • Ensure work environment and patient rooms are neat and free of clutter. 
  • Assists with tracking equipment such as monitors, gurneys, wheelchairs, etc. 
  • Effectively use time, personnel, equipment, and supplies to provide high-quality, cost-effective, patient care and monitoring.
  • Consistently demonstrating flexibility as evidenced by floating to other areas, and it is agreeable to work flexible schedules, including weekends, holidays, evening, and night hours, as necessary to meet the needs of the patients and department. 
  •  Use the standard of care, hospital polices/procedures, and regulatory guidelines to guide work. 
  • Assist with quality improvement, safety and regulatory functions as directed. Participates in process change to improve practice. 
  • Assists in training other Patient Care Technicians, volunteers, students, and other hospital personnel.
  • Adapt to rapidly changing technology by competency in technology and equipment used in the patient care setting. 
  • Demonstrates effective time management and is proactive in prioritizing workload and meeting productivity requirements
  • Other duties as assigned
