Job Description

Classification Responsibilities:

Firefighters perform public safety work involving the protection of life and property by fighting fires, responding to emergency incidents, using Emergency Medical Service (EMS) skills, engaging in fire code enforcement, public education, and station and equipment maintenance activities This class is responsible for performing related duties as required.

Distinguishing Features: Firefighters are required to work a shift schedule, currently 24- hour shifts and 56-hour work weeks. Firefighters may be assigned to work other shift schedules for: assisting on special projects; a temporary assignment/detail; specialized training assignment; light or modified duty; or any other special circumstance that requires such for the benefit of the District or Firefighter. Work at the fire station and emergency incidents are supervised while in progress, and upon completion, by a Lieutenant or higher ranking Officer. Most duties are normally performed under close supervision in accordance with well-defined procedures. A Firefighter may act as an Acting Lieutenant following established guidelines of the District. This class is FLSA nonexempt.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Communication: Communicates with the general public and other District employees in performing emergency scene operations, community service and public education activities, conducting business inspections, presenting public safety training classes, participating in school programs, answering questions, delivering emergency care, and ensuring patient needs. Prepares and reviews budget recommendations on personnel, supplies, and equipment needs for an assigned program area. Produces written documents pertaining to technical and legal matters. Completes accurate incident reports, as required.

Manual/Physical: Performs manual tasks including lifting people and equipment. May work under extreme heat/cold and adverse weather conditions. Working environment includes smoke and hazardous environments. Wears self-contained breathing apparatus during hazardous incidents. Performs firefighting tasks wearing protective clothing and equipment. Operates all emergency radios and related equipment for responding to and operating at emergency scenes. May be required to drive and operate fire apparatus. May be asked to perform duties for long periods of time. Must maintain physical fitness in order to satisfactorily perform all required activities.

Mental: Comprehends and applies written material, such as District Policies, Standard Operating Procedures, Rules and Regulation, Standing Orders, Pre-plans, and Fire Codes. Reads and interprets equipment instructions/manuals in order to operate equipment in emergency situations. Learns firefighting techniques, firefighting equipment operation, and emergency medical service care through on-the-job training, classroom and web-based instruction, and other relevant learning techniques.

Knowledge of:

-Firefighting tactics and strategy including: fireground operations, building construction, property conservation, fireground personnel and civilian safety, communications, hazardous materials, EMS, and technical operations;

-The operation, capabilities, and maintenance of the various types of apparatus and equipment used by the District;

-Fire District Rules and Regulations, Policies, and applicable Fire Codes;

-Geography of the District and other surrounding communities, including the location of streets and target hazards, and hydrants; and

-Emergency medical methods and procedures.

Ability to:

-Learn firefighting apparatus/equipment operation and methods and tasks in firefighting, fire prevention, and related activities;

-Function effectively in emergency situations;

-Engage in moderate to strenuous physical activity, and work long hours under emotional and physical stress during emergency situations;

-Maintain physical fitness and comply with District medical and fitness requirements;

-Understand and follow oral and written instructions; and

-Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, coworkers, supervisors, and the general public.

Experience and Training

  • Any combination of training and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.
  • Must be EMT-B or higher certified and maintain such as a condition of employment. (Hired on or after January 1, 2015 - must maintain approved Advanced EMT/Paramedic certification).

Special Requirements

Ability to perform the "Essential Job Tasks" identified in the current edition of NFPA 1582, Chapter 5
