Job Description:

Performs work in general maintenance, repair and overhaul of all City-owned cars, trucks, light and heavy equipment including both gasoline and diesel.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Note:  Regular and predictable attendance in the performance of this job is an essential function.

  • Shall perform preventative maintenance and repair work on all City vehicles and equipment such as backhoes, front end loaders, graders, street sweepers, sanders, plows, mowers and small equipment, specialty equipment and all other types of municipal power-driven equipment and power tools.
  • Shall diagnose problems and defects on City vehicles and equipment as needed and make recommendations as to the necessary repairs.
  • Shall be capable of doing all minor and most major repair work on vehicles and equipment and shall perform the same.
  • Shall be able to order parts and materials necessary to keep the City vehicles and equipment operative and in good repair.
  • Shall assist with the general upkeep, maintenance, and cleaning of the City garage facility.
  • May be required to work extra overtime hours, weekends, or holidays in the event of emergencies. Hours of work are generally 7:00am and 3:30pm Monday through Friday. Must respond to emergency call outs and participate in the “on-call” program.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • Methods, practices, parts and materials, equipment and tools related to the preventative maintenance and general repair of cars, trucks, light and heavy equipment.
  • Principles of the operation of gasoline and diesel-powered internal combustion engines and system components.
  • Safety standards, policies, guidelines, and procedures and practices.
  • Practices, methods, and tools of the welding trade

Skilled in:

  • Managing situations requiring diplomacy, fairness, firmness and sound judgment.
  • Listen to, read, understand, and communicate the English language so that others are able to understand. This must be done both orally and in writing, at the level appropriate for the position held.
  • Safe work record and demonstration of a strong work ethic.
  • Strong organizational skills and a willingness to be pro-active and accept new challenges.
  • Building effective teams and providing efficient customer service.

Ability to:

  • Listen to, read, understand and communicate the English language so that others are able to understand. This must be done both orally and in writing, at the level appropriate for the position held.
  • Weld and modify equipment, including fabrication of parts as required.
  • Maintain effective working relations with co-workers.
  • Reliably and predictably carry out duties
  • Determine extent of necessary repairs, repair and/or replace defective or damaged parts and determines repairs beyond the shop capabilities. Must show knowledge in the following areas: (1) Tire repair and replacement; (2) Brake adjustment and repair (various systems, i.e. air brakes, disc brakes); (3) Hydraulic adjustment and repair; (4) Electrical repair; (5) Suspension repair and replacement; and (6) sheet metal work.

SUPERVISION

Received:  Works under the general supervision of the Fleet Supervisor and the Public Works Director.

Exercised:  May supervise employees assigned to the Fleet Department in the absence of the Fleet Supervisor.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Required Education/Experience:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience in the repair of cars, trucks, light and heavy-duty equipment.

Other Requirements:

  • Must possess a valid current state-issued driver’s license, not under suspension, revocation or denial nor have any prior alcohol and/or drug-related driving offenses within the last five years. A class “B” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required with airbrakes and combined trailers or must be acquired within six (6) months from date of hire at the applicant’s expense.  A driving record search will be conducted on all applicants prior to employment and will be subject to observation throughout their employment.
  • Successful candidates must pass a background investigation and physical examination in accordance with job duties prior to employment.
  • Applicants will be required to undergo drug testing prior to employment and may be subject to further drug and alcohol testing throughout their employment as per City policy
  • CPR and First Aid training required. All certifications, once achieved, must be maintained throughout employment.

TOOLS & EQUIPMENT USED

Personal computer, Microsoft Office Suite, and databases; phone; fax and copy machine.  Must be able to operate various tools including, but not limited to welders, cutting torches, drills, hydraulic jacks, and grinders.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but can be very loud at times.   

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. The employee must on occasion lift and/or move up to 75 pounds with or without assistance. Requires the dexterity, agility, and ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds without injuring yourself or others.  Work is performed at the garage and in the field in all weather conditions.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.  The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles. The employee is often exposed to outside weather conditions, risk of electrical shock, dampness, direct sunlight, dust, pollen, insect stings and animals.
