General Description of Duties

The Firefighter/EMT works under the supervision of a Fire Captain or the Fire Chief. This role involves responding to fire alarms, extinguishing fires, and protecting lives and property. Firefighters also provide emergency medical services, maintain apparatus and equipment, enforce fire codes, and participate in public education. Routine physical training and continuous learning are also essential aspects of the position. The duties are physically and mentally demanding, often involving work in extreme conditions and high-stress situations.

Organizational Relationships

• Fire Captain, Lieutenant, or Fire Chief.

• Works alongside other Firefighters/EMTs, supporting the department's mission and vision.

• Interacts with the public during emergency and non-emergency situations.

Essential Duties

• Respond to fire alarms and conduct fire suppression.

• Administer emergency medical care and first aid to the sick and injured.

• Assist in rescue operations, including hazardous materials response, swift water rescue, high-angle rescue, and confined space extrication.

• Maintain fire apparatus, equipment, and quarters.

• Inspect buildings for fire hazards and ensure compliance with fire codes.

• Participate in public education and community risk reduction programs.

• Complete documentation and reports related to emergency calls and departmental activities.

• Assist in achieving department goals by adhering to the Fire Department Code of Conduct.

• Perform other duties as assigned by supervisory personnel.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Proficiency in firefighting techniques and emergency medical care.

• Ability to perform physically strenuous tasks in hazardous environments.

• Strong teamwork skills and effective communication abilities.

• Knowledge of city geography, including streets and buildings.

• Mental and emotional stability for handling stressful and traumatic situations.

• Judgment and decision-making capability in emergency scenarios.

Education and Experience

• Minimum age of 18.

• High School Diploma or equivalent.

• Valid Colorado Driver’s License.

• State Certified Firefighter I.

• Colorado State EMT-B Certification.

• CPR Certification.

• Wildland Firefighter II.

• Hazardous Materials Operations Certification.

Environmental and Physical Conditions

The Firefighter/EMT position requires working in extreme weather conditions and hazardous environments. Duties involve intense physical exertion, including pushing, pulling, stooping, crawling, kneeling, climbing, and lifting weights exceeding the individual's body weight. The job is mentally demanding, involving high stress and emotional resilience when dealing with trauma and life-threatening situations. Firefighters work a non-traditional schedule of 48 hours on duty, followed by 96 hours off, averaging a 56-hour work week. This role may also require availability on certain holidays and during specific events

Pay Range/Salary $60,803-$85,124 annually. Hiring range for this position is up to $63,000.
