SUMMARY: Under the general direction of the Street Crew Supervisor, the Equipment Operator is responsible for the operation of light, heavy, and Commercial Drivers License (CDL) required equipment and performs routine maintenance to the Town’s right of way assets and utilities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Equipment Operation

  • Operate bulldozer, loader, dump truck, grader, skid steer, water truck, pup roller, back-hoe, single/double axel truck, and other equipment to maintain and repair Town right of way assets and infrastructure
  • Operate a street sweeper to remove trash and debris from streets
  • Operate jet and vacuum truck for stormwater and wastewater pipe cleaning
  • Operate snow removal equipment to clear snow accumulation on Town streets; perform snow and ice removal
  • Haul materials and transport equipment to job sites
  • Load and offload rocks, debris, and other materials from heavy equipment
  • Operate vehicle attachments appropriate to the task at hand

Streets Maintenance

  • Perform snow and ice removal on Town right of way assets and pedestrian walkways
  • Perform pothole and pavement repair; install and maintain street and traffic signs/posts
  • Paint traffic markings on curbs, streets, parking lines, and crosswalks
  • Paint, repair, and service fire hydrants
  • Repair street lights
  • Perform asset management data entry and record maintenance
  • Participates in the annual Spring Cleanup
  • Completes other tasks and special projects as assigned

Utility Maintenance

  • Maintain and troubleshoot water and wastewater equipment
  • Install, repair, and replace utility infrastructure
  • Perform utility locations

Safety

  • Demonstrate compliance with all Town and Public Works Department safety procedures, regulations, and policies
  • Operate heavy equipment in compliance with Colorado Department of Transportation operating safety policies and procedures
  • Perform pre-and post-trip equipment and vehicle inspections for safety and mechanical issues
  • Comply with the Town of Telluride Substance Abuse Prevention Policy Subject to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations
  • Work safely to prevent accidents

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Education/Experience/Licenses/Certifications):

High school diploma or equivalent required; Valid Driver's License; one (1) to two (2) years of experience in equipment operation or utility maintenance experience required; A valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B with tanker and airbrake endorsement is required or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire; Flagger certification and Confined Spaces required or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire date; CPR and First Aid training is required throughout employment. This position is subject to random drug and alcohol testing in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Knowledge of: heavy and light equipment operation and maintenance; safety standards associated with the operation of heavy equipment; basic vehicle inspection and maintenance; basic mechanical operations; street surfacing application, materials, and processes; utility maintenance and operations; interpreting diagrams, sketches and drawings.

Skill in: hand and foot coordination; effective written and verbal communication skills; following complex oral and written instructions; working independently and collaboratively; time management; attention to detail; maintaining awareness of surroundings; decision making; preparing and maintaining accurate records and reports; problem solving; understanding and abiding by all safety rules.

Environmental Factors:

Duties of this job are regularly performed outside in all types of weather, with high UV rays in the summer and cold temperatures in the winter. Employees must be able to operate a motor vehicle in all types of weather. Work may be performed in confined spaces and at heights up to 25 feet. Must be able to accommodate an on-call schedule as required on a rotating basis.

Physical Factors:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to operate heavy machinery and must be able to coordinate hands and eyes in using the equipment. The employee must be able to climb to heights of 10 ft, walk, reach with hands and arms, stand, stoop, kneel, bend, climb, crawl, crouch, talk and hear over the phone, radio, and in person. The employee must be able to sustain heavy physical exertion, for extended periods of time, and be able to lift more than fifty pounds (50 lbs.) and occasionally move objects up to one hundred pounds (100 lbs.).
