Position Summary:

Supports the engineering department staff in the development and delivery of municipal capital construction projects, and in the various day to day tasks within the engineering department.

  • Supports the other engineering department staff and consultants in the completion of municipal construction projects.
  • Ensure costs are tracked and properly accounted for, standards and plans are followed, and that the work is completed in the best interest of the city.
  • Supports the other engineering department staff in managing the public right-of-way through the issuance and oversight of permitted work.
  • Aid in the collection of design data via field surveys, traffic counts, and other methods to gather information relative to the completion of projects in the city.
  • Under direct supervision, develops project designs in accordance with engineering standards.
  • Provide excellent customer service to external and internal customers including but not limited to effectively listening and communicating, providing accurate information, offering solutions, assisting in resolution, and ensuring timely follow up as needed.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with ability to write and submit reports, proposals, and to communicate effectively with clients, contractors, subcontractors, and consultants.
  • Familiarity with engineering standards, material specifications, and the ability to apply engineering judgement appropriately to resolve discrepancies/disputes.
  • Ability to read and understand construction plans.
  • Working knowledge of CAD, GIS, and asset management software
  • Knowledge of municipal procurement systems and contracting processes
  • Knowledge and understanding of the municipal permit system.
  • Ability to apply acute attention to detail while performing all tasks.

While performing the duties of this job the employee will travel within the City of Canon City and Fremont County

Work time will be split between indoor and outdoor work. Portions of the job will be conducted in an indoor office environment and portions will be conducted in an outdoor construction site environment.

  • Occasionally required to work with and around loud noises, fumes, airborne particles, toxic and caustic chemicals, electricity, vibration, and other hazards typical of a construction site.
  • Physical demands of job require some lifting; pulling; carrying and pushing of objects –approximately 50 pounds.
  • Frequent bending, simple grasping, finger/manual dexterity, standing, walking, twisting upper body, stooping, and hearing.
  • Occasional climbing on stairs and traversing uneven terrain.
  • Occasionally required to work in adverse weather conditions.
  • Communicates verbally and electronically with City staff, outside agencies and the public in one-on-one settings, group settings and over the telephone.

Requirements

Minimum Qualification(s):

  • Experience None
  • Required Education High School Diploma (or equivalent) and enrollment in a post-secondary engineering, construction management, drafting, or related field.
  • Licenses/Certifications Must have a valid Colorado Driver’s License, or the ability to obtain one within sixty 60 days of hire, with a driving record acceptable to the City of Canon City.
  • Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the listed knowledge, abilities and skills may be substituted.

Preferred Qualification(s):

  • Experience Previous experience as an engineering intern, or in the heavy construction field
  • Education Completion of at least one academic period of post-secondary coursework towards an engineering, construction management, drafting, or related degree
  • Licenses/Certifications None

Additional Information:

  • This internship will typically work Monday – Friday but will flex to working weekends and evenings based on seasonal, organizational or event needs.
  • This internship may be required to occasionally attend meetings or other events both during and after normal business hours.
  • Travel within the City of Canon City and Fremont County may be required.
  • Occasional extension of business hours may be required to meet deadlines.
