Job Description

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Master's Degree or able to work towards a Master's Degree in School Counseling (Counselor Corp Grant may be able to help pay for all or part of the Master's Degree in School Counseling if you meet the requirements. Please contact Jackie Crabtree for more information at 719-783-4951.)

2. Colorado Professional Special Services License with appropriate endorsements.

3. Knowledge of developmental needs of students.

4. Understanding and empathy necessary for working with students, parents and staff.

5. Ability in effective counseling techniques and procedures.

6. Ability to communicate, demonstrating both oral and written skills.

7. Ability to develop and execute programs necessary to implement an effective counseling program.

8. CCSD may be able to help with temporary housing for qualified employees.

RESPONSIBLE TO: The counselor is directly responsible to the building Principals in all of his/her duties and responsibilities.

DUTIES:

1. Educational Programs

Consists of structured developmental experiences presented systematically through classroom and group activities. The purpose of the curriculum is to provide students with knowledge of growth and development, to promote their positive mental health and to assist them in acquiring and using life skills. Group Activities:

1. gaining self-awareness

2. developing positive attitudes

3. making healthy choices

4. respecting others

5. gaining responsibility

6. resolving conflicts

7. making effective decisions 8. improving self esteem

2. Responsive Services

Consists of activities to meet the immediate needs and concerns of students whether these needs or concerns require counseling, consultation, referral or information. This component is available to all students and is often student-initiated.

A. Consultation: Counselor consults with parents, teachers, administrators and community agencies regarding strategies to help students.

B. Personal Counseling: Counseling is provided on an individual or small group basis for students expressing difficulties dealing with relationships, personal concerns or other developmental concerns.

C. Crisis Counseling: Counseling and support are provided to students and their families facing emergency situations.

D. Referral: Providing services to augment school programs and/or deal with crises such as abuse. Mental Health Social Services Private therapists and doctors Other community programs/activities

3. System Support Consists of management activities that establish, maintain and enhance the total counseling program. This component is implemented and carried out through activities in the following areas:

A. Participate in student staffing and provide information necessary to assist in the placement of students in different settings Special education ESL Alternative education 504 Coordinator RTI PLC / Student Achievement

B. Organize information regarding community outreach and networking for distribution which will enhance the counseling relationship with staff and community

C. Attend and participate in professional meetings, in-service training, and maintain up-to-date credentials to enhance professional development.

D. Coordinate with other agencies to provide services to students.

4. Duties as outlined by Custer County School District C-1 Board Policy.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand; walk; sit; use hands and fingers to handle, or feel. The work requires the use of telephone and using fingers to operate computer or typewriter keyboards. The employee is continually hearing and speaking to exchange information. The employee is required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Ability to be on feet up to eight hours every day. The work is mostly walking and standing with periods of sitting. Typical positions require workers to lift and carry up to 50 pounds; climb stairs, bend and crouch; reach, hold, grasp and turn objects; use fingers to operate computer or typewriter keyboards; and feel the shape, size and temperature of objects. The work requires the ability to speak normally, to use normal or aided vision and hearing, detect odors, identify colors, see, write, count, read, speak, analyze, alphabetize, perceive depth, operate a motor vehicle, and operate motor equipment.

EVALUATION: Will be evaluated by the building Principals in accordance with district policy.
