Job Description:

Licensures & Certificates (must be active and current.):

  • Current Colorado P.O.S.T. Certification (out-of-state laterals accepted).
  • Possession of, or the ability to obtain, certification in a digital forensics disciple through an international association (LEVA, IAI, IACIS) within two (2) years of hire.
  • Current Colorado driver's license with acceptable record.
0-2 years of P.O.S.T. service $80,000.00/annually
 2+ years of P.O.S.T. service $84,875.00/annually
 4+ years of P.O.S.T. service $89,750.00/annually
 7+ years of P.O.S.T. service $99,500.00/annually
 
Hiring & Retention Bonuses:
  • Valid P.O.S.T certification with no law enforcement experience is eligible for hiring and retention bonuses totaling $5,000.00.
  • Valid P.O.S.T certification with a minimum of two (2) years of law enforcement experience is eligible for hiring and retention bonuses totaling $10,000.00. 
Basic Purpose of the Job:
Under general supervision, performs forensic computer/digital evidence recovery and analysis on a wide variety of specialized visual and/or computer based related peripheral equipment and data storage devices; performs advanced analytical procedures to determine authenticity and integrity of evidence and comparative evaluations; provides expert testimony in court articulating advanced concepts pertaining to digital multimedia evidence.  Reviewing potentially criminal content of a graphic nature.

Essential Functions:

  • Perform forensic computer/digital evidence recovery and analysis on a wide variety of specialized visual and/or computer based related peripheral equipment and data storage devices, such as hard drive discs, solid-state drives, optical discs, mobile devices as well as various other forms of computer media.
  • Perform a variety of advanced procedures to analyze digital multimedia evidence for investigative and court purposes; clarification of audio, compare unknown objects to known objects, determine speed of vehicles and height of suspects through the use of photogrammetry.
  • Prepare clear and concise reports that demonstrate analytical procedures follow scientific methodology and can be reproduced; provide expert testimony in court articulating advanced concepts pertaining to digital multimedia evidence.
  • Review search warrants to validate authority and accompany police to execute search warrants and collect evidence.
  • Conduct crime scene investigations, digitally document; identify, collect and preserve digital evidence; reconstruct crime scenes.
  • Maintain and manage the proper handling procedures regarding protection, collection, and storage of physical and digital evidence.
  • Provide instruction to other department employees on digital evidence collection concepts and best practices.
  • Perform analysis, interpret data and develop conclusions.
  • Create system images or capture network settings from information technology environments to preserve as evidence.
  • Conduct predictive or reactive analyses on security measures to support cyber security initiatives.

Job Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree with a from an accredited college or university with an emphasis in computer science, information technology or related field. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
  • One year of progressively responsible forensic digital analysis experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of computer systems and peripheral devices, including hard drive discs, solid-state drives, optical discs, flash memory, and mobile devices. Ability to troubleshoot complex devices.
  • Knowledge of digital encryption and decryption techniques and methods and techniques of crime scene documentation and evidence collection.
  • Knowledge of applicable Federal, State, County and/or City statues, rules, regulations, case law and procedures.
  • Ability to maintain digital lab software, equipment, and program licenses.
  • Knowledge of best practices and guidelines for processing digital evidence, hard drive file systems, mobile device operating file systems, registry entries, user/system-generated artifacts, binary data, and deleted files/folders, P-list files, encoded time stamps, application and system logs.
  • Ability to compare class and unique characteristics in criminalistics investigations. Understanding of principles of DVR operating systems, hard drive file formats, and export options.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
Office environment and field environment requiring occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds and 20 pounds on a regular basis, carrying, walking and standing, hand/eye coordination for operation of personal computer; vision for reading and preparing written reports and documents; frequent speech communication, hearing for transcribing, and listening to maintain communications with employees and citizens. Works primarily in clean, comfortable environment. Subject to sitting for long periods of time. Occasional contact with stressful situations and irate individuals. Unconventional work hours required including nights, weekends and holidays. Frequent local travel may be required.
