Location: Canon City, CO.

Job Description

Patrols county areas, enforcing the law and protecting life and property. Performs investigations at the scene of a crime and related follow-up duties. Investigates and apprehends persons charged by warrant or subpoena. Serves civil process. Acts as first responder to emergency situations and assures proper authorities respond. Patrols urban and rural areas of the county to provide a visible deterrent, in uniform and in marked vehicles, to enforce laws and protect life and property. Identifies traffic hazards. Conducts surveillance in industrial and residential areas for signs of any criminal activity. Patrols for suspicious persons or vehicles. Prepares investigative reports, sketches and drawings, using appropriate grammar, symbols and mathematical computations. Effectively and coherently uses Interpersonal Communication skills to communicate with individuals and the public by providing information and directions, mediating disputes and advising of rights and processes. Demonstrates communications skills in court and formal settings. Endures verbal and mental abuse when confronted with hostile views and opinions of suspects and other people encountered in antagonistic environments. Prepares a variety of written reports using appropriate grammar, spelling and punctuation. Enters data into computer systems or databases, looks up information in databases, creates basic word processor documents and enters data into spreadsheets. Uses email to communicate. Provides information to citizens regarding general legal procedures as necessary. Effectuates arrests, forcibly if necessary, uses handcuffs and other restraints, and subdues resisting suspects using approved techniques of arrest control, defensive tactics and weapons. Resorts to use of hands and feet and other approved weapons in defense of self or others. Exercises independent judgment in determining where there is reasonable suspicion to detain, when probable cause exists to search and arrest and when appropriate force should be used and to what degree. Maintains knowledge of current Colorado Revised Statutes and County Ordinances. Operates a law enforcement vehicle during both the day and night, in emergency situations involving speeds in excess of posted limits, in congested traffic and in unsafe road conditions caused by factors such as fog, smoke, rain, ice and snow.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent required. One-year accredited college or related technical school preferred; or three (3) to six (6) months related experience or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional Requirements/Information:

Valid and current Colorado Driver’s License. First Aid/CPR certification required and must be maintained. Firearms qualifications required with assigned weapon system in compliance with policy and procedure. Arrest control (PPCT) certification required. Colorado Peace Officer Certification required C.R.S. 16-2.5-103. Must be a minimum of 21 years of age.
