The nurse aide is responsible for patients’ daily personal care including but not limited to am/pm care, baths, vital signs, passing meal trays and nourishment, feeding and toileting. The nurse aide is responsible for reporting unusual symptoms, observations, patient requests and/or their families’ requests to the registered nurse on duty. The nurse aide shall identify safety needs of patients and answer call lights promptly. This job description does not intend to list every function of the position.

MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS High School Graduate or GED equivalent Completion of an accredited Certified Nursing Aide Program

MINIMUM WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS One to two year experience in a hospital or clinical setting

LICENSE/CERTIFICATIONS

  • Current Colorado Nurse’s Aide Certification
  • AHA BLS Certification

OTHER SKILLS Demonstrate initiative to stay current with technological changes affecting the practice of nursing.

POSITION DUTIES (ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS)

Certified Nurse Aide

  • Demonstrates sensitivity to patient’s emotional, social and mental health needs through skillful, directed interactions.
  • Exhibits behavior in support and promotion of patient’s rights.
  • Demonstrate observational and documenting skills needed in support of the assessment of patient’s health, physical condition and well-being.
  • Accommodates patients as much as possible by demonstrating flexible scheduling of activities of daily living (ADL).
  • Assures nutrition and fluid needs of patient are met by providing correct diet and amount of fluids; documents on intake and output as appropriate; records appetite.
  • Leaves patient care area neat and tidy and stocked with necessary supplies at the end of each shift as observed by supervisor and peers.
  • Collects and documents data appropriately in the electronic health record (EHR) regarding personalized care given each patient.
  • Promotes positive interpersonal relationship and demonstrates effective communication skills to solve problems, to carry out hospital policies and procedures, and to coordinate patient care.
  • Applies information learned during informative learning sessions and effectively teaches other pertinent information.
  • Accepts work assignments as delegated by supervisor.
  • Accepts responsibility for solving interpersonal conflicts, reports conflicts which cannot be resolved and require intervention by a Supervisor.
  • Actively contributes to a pleasant work environment.
  • Actively participates in staff meetings by identifying concerns or problems.
  • Demonstrates patience and tact when dealing with patients, families, physicians, and other healthcare team members.
  • Communicates and interacts with patient’s family in a way that is perceived by the family as positive and supportive.
  • Takes steps to decrease stress and/or increase effectiveness of coping mechanism of patients and families having difficulty dealing with illness and hospitalization.
  • Demonstrates basic nursing skills including bed-making, vital signs, administering oxygen as directed by registered nurse or MD, caring for the patient environment, measuring fluid and nutrient intake and output, assisting in the provision of proper nutritional care, ambulation, transferring, proper use of body mechanics and maintaining infection control and safety standards.
  • Demonstrates ability to assist patients in attaining and maintaining functional independence by incorporating principles of restorative nursing including proper body positioning and alignment, encouraging patients to be active by assisting them to be up and out of bed for reasonable periods of time except when contraindicated by physician’s order, maintaining a program of preventative skin care, maintaining a bowel and bladder program when appropriate, assisting patients in ambulation techniques and in carrying out rehabilitation exercises as planned, providing patients with assistance and instruction in activities of daily living such as feeding, dressing, grooming, toileting and use of appropriate assistive devices, assisting in teaching motivation and reality orientation when appropriate, assisting and performing range of motion exercises and care and use of prosthetic devices such as hearing aids, glasses and dentures.
  • Promotes own professional growth and demonstrates professional conduct in regards to the Nursing Department and facility and professional relationships and the practice of nursing.
  • Attends all mandatory in-services.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and responsibility for the implementation and adherence to policies and procedures as observed by supervisor.
  • Assesses own limitations and learning needs and seeks educational and learning experiences in areas of identified growth needs.
  • Develops short and long term goals and initiates a plan for completion.
  • Demonstrates flexibility in working hours and schedules in order to meet the needs of the Nursing Department.
  • Participates in orientation of new staff, students, and PRN employees.
  • Identifies and documents, as requested, the new employee’s strengths and opportunities for improvement for communication to the Supervisor.
  • Remains current with industry changes and information.
  • Maintains certification in designated skills as defined by Colorado law and SVH Policy.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and adheres to policies and procedures of St. Vincent Health.
  • Maintains confidentiality in all health information matters per HIPAA.
  • Promotes good relationships with other hospital departments in order to achieve optimal working conditions.
  • Demonstrates flexibility and willingly accepts responsibility, notifying supervisor when additional work can be assumed.
  • Receives, evaluates and discusses suggestions and constructive criticism in a professional manner.
  • Appropriately responds to safety and emergency procedures as outlined in the facility policies for fire and/or other safety or infection control matters.
  • Maintains ability to float to other departments as necessary and appropriate when ACU census is low.
  • Other duties as assigned.

General

  • Plans and organizes work activity to complete scheduled assignments on time.
  • Completes an acceptable work load and accepts additional tasks willingly.
  • Takes appropriate 15 minute breaks and 30 minute for lunch, or notifies Department Lead via email when unable to do so.
  • Understands and follows the chain of command when dealing with problems and concerns.
  • Complies with facility policies and procedures, including fire evacuation and disaster plans.
  • Deals with interpersonal conflict in a healthy and positive manner.
  • Completes occurrence and all other reports per facility policy.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and practice of standard precautions for prevention of the spread of disease.
