Salary Grade: $24.00/ hour non-exempt, at will position/ part time

Work Year:  Variable  (approximately 10 hours per week in school year and 32-40 hours per week in non-student times; documented on timesheet) roughly follows the LCSD Calender

Reports To:  Transportation Director 

SUMMARY  Service and maintain school buses for the safe and timely transportation of students.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Order repair parts and supplies for vehicles and shop.
  • Clean and make minor repairs on the bus garage to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Assist bus drivers in performing pre-trip inspections.
  • Repair minor defects on the buses between the first and second runs, such as lights/switches, air leaks, etc.
  • Change oil, oil filters, fuel filters, and lubrication.
  • Perform monthly repairs and maintenance on vehicles, such as adjust brakes, check exhaust systems,

                                        repair fluid leaks, check fluid leaks, repair seats and windows, etc.

  • Repair flat tires and install new tires.
  • Perform annual inspections and repairs on vehicles as required by the Colorado Department of Education
  • Write specifications and request bids on new buses from dealers.
  • Repair engines, transmissions, differentials, and drive lines if the necessary tools are available in the shop.
  • Arrange for major repairs and warranty work to be performed by dealers.
  • Attend CDE summer workshops, when necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING Two years of high school, vocational school, or equivalent on-the-job training and experience

EXPERIENCE  2-3 years experience in mechanics and transportation

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & EQUIPMENT  Knowledge of mechanical systems; air brake systems, inspection, and repair; and vehicle electrical systems.  Training in CDE bus inspections.  Some knowledge of vehicle computer and fuel injection systems.  Operating knowledge of school buses, other District vehicles, and tools and equipment for annual inspections required within one month after hire.  Operating knowledge of shop equipment preferred at hire; required within 2 weeks after hire.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS  CDL license, “B” license with P2-S endorsement, CDE air brake certification, and annual vehicle inspection certification required within 1-2 months after hire. Must be able to pass District Required fingerprinting/background check. 

SUPERVISION/TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITY  Directs the work of Helper in the bus garage, relating to lubrication, changing oil, washing buses, and changing tires.  Acts a resource for Helper by providing direction, to drivers by assisting with pre-trip inspections, and to other District personnel regarding repair and maintenance of school vehicles.

JUDGMENT AND DECISION MAKING Work is self-directed.  Requires independent judgment and technical knowledge to perform required repair or maintenance; to assess the tools, parts, and time required for the work; and to prioritize work with the least impact on the drivers, students, and schools.  Decision making requires collaboration with the Transportation Director.  Work is guided by CDE and Department of Transportation procedures and regulations.  Errors in decision making could lead to mechanical breakdowns, delayed repairs, and/or unsafe vehicles.  Supervisor is involved only in major decisions. 

DIVERSITY OF DUTIES  Duties require cross training in all aspects of bus repair and maintenance, and CDE and DOT procedures and regulations.  Duties extend across several District areas on a daily basis.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms.  The employee frequently is required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  The employee is occasionally required to walk.  The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts.  The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, explosives (e.g., fuels, solvents, and batteries), and vibration.  The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; outside weather conditions; extreme heat; and risk of electrical shock.  The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

MENTAL FUNCTIONS  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to analyze, coordinate, and evaluate.  Occasionally required to compare, communicate, copy, instruct, compute, use interpersonal skills, compile, and negotiate.
