SUMMARY: Under the general direction of the Parks Supervisor, the Assistant Parks Supervisor is responsible for supervising Park staff and performing a variety of skilled duties in the areas of overall maintenance, landscaping, and equipment operations in the Town's parks, trails, athletic fields, municipal gardens, and grounds.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervision

  • Assist the Parks Supervisor with overseeing the performance of seasonal Park staff
  • Train and monitor workload and productivity for year-round Park staff
  • Monitor seasonal staff productivity to ensure that deadlines and goals are met; inspect completed work
  • Execute Park's procedures, processes, and policies; identifies training and development needs of seasonal staff; leads efforts of seasonal staff in daily completion of job duties
  • Assign and review staff work; provides direction and instruction to staff when needed
  • Train staff on proper equipment operation techniques and safety protocols
  • Report any issues to Parks Supervisor; may assist with resolving workplace issues
  • Manager on Duty in the absence of Parks Supervisor
  • Other duties as assigned

Maintenance

  • Perform a variety of semi-skilled to complex maintenance activities, including indoor and outdoor facilities maintenance
  • Install, repair, and maintain park equipment and facilities such as playground equipment, picnic tables, benches, pavilions, fences, trash cans, signage, tennis courts, volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, BBQ grills,
  • Maintain indoor Town Park building facilities; performs janitorial and custodial tasks, including sweeping, mopping, and trash removal; performs indoor ice rink maintenance in the winter
  • Ensure a safe and clean environment in all parks; picks up litter and removes garbage
  • Perform outdoor winter activities maintenance, including Nordic track grooming, outdoor ice rink maintenance, plowing snow on Town Park parking lot and roadways
  • Regulate irrigation systems on athletic fields, gardens, and parks with programming cycles for appropriate settings based on time of year and water requirements and operates with the understanding and in compliance with local regulations and restrictions; diagnoses problems to repair existing irrigation systems; fixes broken sprinkler heads
  • Perform athletic field maintenance tasks such as lining, dragging, laying out, and squaring athletic fields with various layouts; utilizing basic math skills to ensure proper layout/measurements; repairs field fences and assists in field renovation
  • Maintain various gardens and planting beds in Town parks, along trails, and on municipal grounds; prunes and removes trees, shrubs, and bushes as needed
  • Coordinate the annual flower purchase order for Park gardens, Main Street planter boxes, and hanging baskets

Safety

  • Inspect playgrounds, park amenities, and athletic fields for safety and compliance with Park standards and records safety data
  • Demonstrate compliance with all Town and Parks and Rec department safety procedures, regulations, policies and executes safe equipment and vehicle operation
  • Promote a safety culture to prevent injuries and illness by assisting in educating Park staff on safety practices
  • Report hazardous conditions and safety concerns to the Parks Supervisor

Equipment and Vehicle Operation

  • Operate a variety of equipment such as: push and riding mowers, string trimmers, aerators; blowers, edgers, sprayers, skid steers, backhoes, snowmobiles; Zamboni Ice Resurfacer; small loaders, trucks, tractors, and trailers
  • Operate small power equipment such as saws, drills, drain snakes, and other equipment
  • Perform preventative maintenance on equipment and may be required to make minor repairs or adjustments

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Education/Experience/Licenses/Certifications):

High school diploma or equivalent; valid driver's license; two (2) - three (3) years of previous maintenance experience required, one (1) to two (2) years of previous experience in a supervisory role preferred; one (1) year of relevant experience in irrigation systems and/or equipment operation or any equivalent experience preferred; first aid and CPR certification training required throughout employment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Knowledge of: Parks processes and procedures, including facilities maintenance, landscaping, plant species, best planting practices, irrigation, high-level carpentry, sports field maintenance, occupational hazards, safety practices applicable to custodial work, safe handling of chemicals, and principles and practices of safety/security reporting; proper safety protocols when working with all equipment and heavy machinery.

Skill in: effective verbal and written communication; conflict management and problem-solving; time and priority management; critical thinking; effectively mentoring, supervising, and supporting staff; flexibility and ability to adapt to changing work priorities; recognizing, reporting, and correcting problems; troubleshooting mechanical problems and recognizing when routine maintenance attention is required.

Environmental Factors:

Work location varies and may be indoors or outdoors year-round. Work performed outdoors is in and around Town Park and other various parks around Town and is subject to high UV rays and extreme cold conditions in the winter; work performed indoors is subject to confined spaces, heights, hazardous materials, blood-borne pathogens, and cleaning chemicals; the noise level in the work environment and during use of equipment can be very loud.

Physical Factors:

Includes standing or walking a majority of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; working on irregular surfaces, ability to sustain heavy physical exertion; ability to perform in adverse weather conditions; ability to lift and carry 50lbs.
