About the Position: 
The City of Grand Junction Finance Department is seeking an Accounting Supervisor to oversee and coordinate work in support of the City’s professional accounting and financial reporting functions. The successful candidate will have a strong background in multiple operational areas of accounting, including accounts payable, payroll, and accounts receivable.

About the Finance Department:
The City of Grand Junction Finance Department works to ensure financial stability through sound and transparent financial management to serve a healthy and thriving community. You will be part of a team that truly cares about providing the highest level of service to all internal and external customers. The department includes the following functions: Budget, Accounting & Financial Reporting, Sales & Use Tax Administration, Grant Administration, & Municipal Court.

Duties

What You'll Do:
  • Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise and review the work of assigned staff.
  • Perform a variety of analytical duties in support of professional accounting functions.
  • Audit and prepare journal entries for various accounting applications; approve journal entries prepared by others.
  • Review accounts payable expenditures.
  • Assist staff with coordinating the City’s external audit.
  • Assist with the coordination, preparation, and submission of the City’s Annual Comprehensive  Financial Report and review of assigned annual tax returns to established standards.
  • Monitor payroll preparation and distribution.
  • Develop, administer, and monitor the components of the financial software system including account structure.
  • Assess internal control environment, structure, and policies.
  • Prepare, monitor, and track assigned budgets.
  • Respond to, investigate and resolve concerns and/or complaints received from the public, departments, and employees and explain applicable City policies.
  • Coordinate grant management functions and monitor compliance with grant policy.
  • Attend and participate in professional group meetings; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of accounting.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Qualifications

What We're Looking For:
  • Four (4) years of increasingly responsible professional accounting experience, including one (1) year of supervisory experience.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Colorado driver's license.
Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
